Watermelon is the quintessential summer fruit. It’s abundant, sweet, and crowd-pleasing. There are so many ways to enjoy this fruit in addition to just biting into a big slice.

Watermelon is mostly water, which is ideal in summer when it’s hot and we need to cool down quickly and stay hydrated. Slices of this melon are a perfect snack or side dish for any meal.
You can also make watermelon puree or juice and drink it straight or serve it in a cocktail like this one.

How to make watermelon puree
There are 2 ways to make watermelon puree. Both are fairly easy, the most time-consuming part is cutting up the melon itself. For this recipe, I’m showing you how to use a blender to puree watermelon.
You can also use a muddler or the back of a spoon to achieve the same effect. In this vodka watermelon cocktail, I used the muddler method with great results.
Pureeing watermelon with a blender is a breeze. The first step is a good blender. Invest in one with multiple blades that can chop, puree and blend just about anything. This Nutri Ninja is my favorite, it will puree watermelon as easily as it chops ice for a slushie. This blender will last a long time and your drinks will be smooth every single time.
Try this non-alcoholic frozen watermelon drink, it’s a tasty summer treat.
This particular blender comes with multiple cups in addition to the large pitcher. I like using these cups for single-serve drinks and smoothies. The small blade attachment for the cups is just as powerful as the large blade and the small size means every part of your smoothie or cocktail is pureed and perfect.

Once the watermelon is blended into a nice puree, you will need to strain out the juice. You can absolutely drink this with the pulp, in fact, it’s delicious and healthy and full of fiber. For this cocktail, we’re just using the juice to create a smooth finish.
Place a fine fine mesh strainer over a measuring cup and strain out the juice. You’ll need about a cup of juice for this recipe. Use a spoon to push down the pulp in the strainer and help remove all of the liquid. Discard the pulp when it’s fully drained.
This juice can be strained and stored in the fridge for a few days to enjoy on its own or in other drinks.

What to mix with watermelon juice
Watermelon is deliciously sweet! Anything mixed with this juice should complement that flavor and not overpower it. Clear low flavor alcohol like vodka is great for bringing out the full flavor of this summer melon.

Citrus is the perfect compliment to watermelon, a little lime juice balances out the sweet with a bit of sour. Try orange juice for a sweet citrus pairing.

For this recipe, I’m using silver tequila which has a nice flavor and pairs beautifully with watermelon and lime. There are many types of tequila and some have more robust flavors that would clash with such a sweet juice.
Silver tequila is a wonderful mixer for all kinds of drinks. A class is the tequila sunrise, another drink mixed with sweet and citrus to create a delicious cocktail.

Fresh mint enhances the sweetness of the watermelon even more. Add a few leaves of mint to a glass then pour in the lime juice. Use a muddler to break up the leaves just a little, this releases the flavor. Then add tequila and top with ice.

Fill the rest of the glass with the fresh watermelon juice you just made and top with a sprig of mint. You can also garnish with a lime slice or a watermelon wedge. Whatever you want to add to create a fun presentation.
