Learn how to make a refreshing watermelon cocktail using summer’s most popular fruit. Fresh watermelon is the key to this delicious drink.
Watermelon is one of those amazing fruits. It’s a healthy snack made up of over 90% water! It fills you up without weighing you down. To me this colorful fruit tastes like summer. For this drink I’m using just the juice from watermelon to create something delicious.
What to mix with watermelon
When making a cocktail using watermelon or watermelon juice you want to stick with neutral or citrus liquors and mixers. Watermelon is sweet and won’t need any additional sweeteners. Try using vodka, white rum or gin with watermelon juice. To add citrus you can try triple sec or lime juice, or both! Play around with ratios until you find that perfect balance of sweet and sour.
Make Watermelon Juice
This cocktail begins with 2 cups of cubed watermelon. Use a glass measuring cup to hold the melon. Then use a muddler to smash the fruit and release the juice. A muddler, or the back of a spoon, is the easy way to juice a melon.
You can also put the cubes into a blender and pulverize them. Or add them to a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. All of these methods will extract the juice from the pulp.
Once your watermelon is sufficiently smushed, you need to separate the pulp from the juice. You could use all the pieces, but using just the juice will create a smoother drink.
Grab a fine mesh strainer and pour the juice through it and into another glass. This removes the pulp and seeds and leaves you with just delicious sweet juice.
Now it’s time to mix up the drink. I used equal parts of vodka and triple sec for this recipe. You could also try white rum, it would pair beautifully with the sweet watermelon. The citrus flavor in triple sec offsets the sweetness of the watermelon and compliments it well.
Fill a glass with ice and pour in the cocktail, squeeze in a little lime juice and garnish to your hearts content!
