A spritzer is a pretty simple idea. Combine ice cold wine and sparkling water over ice and enjoy! A light and bubbly drink, garnished with a few pieces of fruit for hint of flavor. This cocktail is ideal for a hot day and is perfect if you are looking for something lighter in calories and alcohol content.

Ingredients in a wine spritzer

You want to start with a crisp white wine. A pino grigio or something similar, it’s best to stay on the dry side. Let any sweetness come from added fruit. If you prefer a sweet drink in general you may want to try a sweeter white wine or even a rose. The recipe below is a great place to start. Once you taste this, try new flavor combinations with your choice of wine and added fruit.

Next you need some sparkling water. It’s not hard to find sparkling water these days, most stores have an aisle dedicated to all the varieties. Choose a water with a hint of flavor like cherry, tangerine or lime. Or go all out with hibiscus or watermelon! Seriously, so many options. Start here if you are looking for something new to try.

I enjoy sparkling water so much I invested in a SodaStream. This handy little device lets me carbonate my own water! So cool, so easy and a lot less waste. I make a few liters each night and pop them in the fridge. Then in the morning I flavor each bottle with a natural essence or a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime.

Using a soda stream with a little added flavor I never have to worry about running out of bubbly water for my cocktails. No more bottled losing their fizz in my fridge, I just make up a new bottle when I need one.

For this recipe I combined a pinot grigio, unflavored sparkling water and fresh lime and raspberries. I squeezed the lime into the finished cocktail then dropped in the whole slice. This little addition of fruit compliments the wine nicely. Served ice cold, this is an ideal drink for summer.
